New Kathak Dance by Bhavani Lee
Bhavani Lee, who has recently begun to grace Shyamdas' kirtan events with her beautiful dance, studied Kathak from childhood and developed the New Kathak Dance Concept, of which she writes, "The modern artist discovers a brilliance in the gem of this ancient art form. Within the classical Indian rhythmic cycle called Taal, comes a precise focus and freedom." Kathak is a north Indian classical dance which dates back to 1250 B.C. The word originates from the Sanskrit Katha, meaning to tell a story. Kathak originated in the Hindu temples but is also traced to the royal Mughal courts. Kathak has been uniquely enriched throughout its history by a Persian influence as well as by the patronage of the Mughal kings.
